Can I Use My Superannuation for Dental Treatment?

Eligible patients may be able to access superannuation through ATO compassionate release provisions to help fund certain dental treatments. Eligibility and approval are determined by the ATO — approval is not guaranteed.

Some patients ask whether they can use their superannuation to help pay for dental treatment. Under the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) compassionate release provisions, eligible patients may be able to access some of their superannuation early for certain medical expenses, including some dental treatments.

Important things to understand:

  • Not everyone is eligible. The ATO assesses each application against its compassionate release criteria.
  • Approval is determined by the ATO — not by your dentist, our network, or any third party.
  • Approval is not guaranteed, even if you are undergoing dental treatment.
  • This is general information only — it does not constitute financial, taxation or legal advice.

How the process generally works:

1. You have a clinical assessment and treatment plan from a dental practitioner. 2. You apply to the ATO for compassionate release (if you believe you may meet the eligibility requirements). 3. The ATO assesses your application and determines whether to approve access to your superannuation. 4. If approved, funds are released according to ATO requirements.

We provide general information about this option and may guide eligible patients through the application process. Assistance with an application does not imply eligibility and does not guarantee approval.

Patients may also wish to seek independent financial or taxation advice before applying.

If you would like to understand your treatment options, a complimentary consultation with an experienced dental practitioner is the best place to start.
