Can Dentures Cause Bone Loss?

Yes — traditional dentures that rest on the gums do not stimulate the jawbone, which can lead to gradual bone resorption over time. This is one reason many patients explore implant-based alternatives.

When natural teeth are present, the forces of chewing are transmitted through the tooth roots into the jawbone, which helps maintain bone density. When teeth are lost, this stimulation stops, and the body begins to resorb (break down) the unused bone — a process known as bone resorption.

Traditional removable dentures sit on top of the gums and do not provide the bone stimulation that natural teeth or dental implants do. Over time, this can lead to:
