Are Veneers Permanent?
Veneers are a long-lasting cosmetic solution, but they are not permanent in the sense that they last forever. Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years; composite veneers may last 5–7 years.
The term "permanent" in dentistry can be misleading. Veneers are considered a long-term cosmetic solution, but they will eventually need replacement.
Porcelain veneers are the more durable option, typically lasting 10–15 years or longer with good care. They are custom-made in a dental laboratory and bonded to the prepared tooth surface.
Composite veneers are applied directly by the dentist and generally last 5–7 years. They are more affordable but less resistant to staining and wear.
In most cases, a small amount of enamel is removed to accommodate the veneer. This preparation is generally irreversible, meaning you will need some form of restoration on those teeth going forward — whether new veneers, crowns, or another solution.
To maximise the lifespan of your veneers:
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene
- Avoid biting hard objects (ice, pens, fingernails)
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Attend regular dental check-ups
